Artist Statement
I am an artist whose interests include psychedelia, language, transcendental experiences, and counter-cultures throughout the ages. My primary media are video, posters, collage and latch-hook rugs and pillows. Currently my work is taking the form of an invocation of the potential for motivational sloganeering to effect real transformation and possibly even transcendence in the form of a hyper-kinetic combination of references.
I believe that art can be about what it means to be alive, that our generation doesn’t need to collapse into irony and meaninglessness, that irony is still a tool to be used, that intricacy and structure and humor and absurdity and raw emotion can combine to make a statement worth consideration.
The effort and repetitions it takes to make this life a good one sometimes seem insurmountable. But as David Foster Wallace notes, it is facing these raw, gooey emotions, the ones that are embarrassing and hard to talk about, are what it means to be alive, and if we can bring them to the surface, we might be able to make it through.
